Day 27 - End of northern section of tour

Grand Mosque Marrakesh

Arrival in Marrakesh and we instantly noticed the different feel of the place – very flat, greater number of tourists and very hot weather.  After arriving at the hotel we dropped off our bags, had a shower and breakfast, then took to the streets to explore.

The usual group of 6 decided to tour the city using the Marrakesh Express – red double-decker buses that travel around the sites and you can get on and off as you please for a day pass.  Due to traffic and a bit of confusion, we ended up being on the bus for 3.25 hours but it was a fantastic way to orient ourselves to the city.  The traffic is chaotic, there is an amazing mix of people in the streets – some totally covered, others not so conservative in their dress.
We checked out a couple of sites in the medina and the main square – including snake charmers, people with monkies and food and drink stalls.  There wasn’t as much happening as there would be in the evening, it was hot and crazy on the streets, so we all headed back to the hotel in the late afternoon for a rest.  The hotel has a small pool so beers and a swim was a great way to recharge.
Since it was the group’s final night together (end of north Morocco tour before we started the southern section), our tour leader took us out to a lovely Italian restaurant for dinner.  The food (although not Moroccan) was magnificent.  I had a most amazing calamari salad, and a couple of glasses of red wine (that is served cold!)
