Day 117 - Paradise (8th July)

Jumped out of bed quickly when we realised we had slept in.  It was 9.10am and we had planned to jump on a ferry for the tiny island of Drvenik Mali.

We made the ferry and had time to drop off washing on the way (after a month of handwashing I will happily pay anything to get it all clean!)  The ferry trip took just over an hour and lucky for us, served fabulous coffee.

Drvenik Mali really is tiny, covered in rocks with splatters of olive trees (some so old that they need stakes to hold up branches), and fig trees.  There are a few houses, not many.  We waked for about 10 minutes to a little beach on the other side of the island (told you it was small!), and found paradise.  The water was crystal clear, small waves, and not many people around.  There was only one restaurant that was rending out lounges and umbrellas for 60 kunas (about $12) for the day so we plonked ourselves happily and spent the next 5.5 hours in the one spot.  We had noticed that people around us were wearing crocs and wetsuit booties on their feet in the water.  I thought it was for any rocks, but it ended up being for sea urchins.  I caught the end of one - really need to look out for them when walking into the water.

About 1.30pm we decided we were hungry so headed to the restaurant.  The fish on display looked so fresh we chose a sea bream - grilled with salad and chips.  The meal was excellent, just so tasty.  We had a beer to wash it down with, then the cook gave us a complementary octopus salad (with lemon, olive oil, parsley and red onion) and 2 glasses of white wine as he said it went better with seafood than beer.  Who were we to argue??  By the end of lunch we were trying to decide if we would come back again to Paradise on Sunday or Monday.

On the ferry trip back to Trogir I realised that smoking is such a big thing still in Europe.  I really think it is on the decline in Australia, or that smokers are more aware of the impact their habit has on others, but in Europe, people don't really care which is sad but also annoying.

Both of us were not hungry at all for dinner.  I also wanted some time to chill out and catch up on the blog so Al went out for a couple of hours, whilst I stayed back in the room.  Having air conditioning is heaven.  It has been really hot here, well over 30c every day we have been in Trogir so the cool air is a welcome relief.
