We left Warrington at 10am, bound for the Lakes District. Julien drove, and we had a couple of stops along the way for Maria’s work. We headed straight for Windamere (M and J had been here before but I hadn’t), had a look around, then continued onto Boness. Next stop was Hawkeshead, where Beatrix Potter’s husband had his business. The landscape was amazing, incredibly green fields, loads of black-faced sheep and really quaint villages. It is summer school holidays at the moment, and there were obviously a lot of visitors to the area. Every second shop is an outdoor hiking equipment shop - very clear to see what a lot of people come to the area for.
Onto Torver, we checked into our B&B called the Old Rectory. We were provided with peppermint tea and cakes for PM tea, which was a lovely touch. The B&B is a big 2 story building, surrounded by fields of sheep and cows. We dropped off bags, settled in, then headed to the first of the 2 pubs in Torver (the Church Inn) for dinner and drinks. Our guide book directed us across the fields to the pub, instead of following the road, which was a pretty walk, but incredibly wet so we ended up with very wet shoes.
The pub was a quaint place with big fireplaces and low ceilings. The chef use to work for David Bowie and Iman – there are photos of them on the walls. We had a few beers, and then moved onto dinner. I was longing for red meat so had a lovely steak, washed down with a bottle of red wine. We moved back into the bar for a nightcap (more beers), then Julien and I rolled out of the pub – Maria was a lot more sensible with her drinking. We walked back to the B&B in the pouring rain and it was pitch black, giggling all the way.
