Very early morning today, the alarm was set for 6.20am so we could throw some clothes on and go up to Petronas Twin Towers to get tickets for the sky bridge and observation deck. Petronas Twin Towers is a real icon for Malaysia, especially KL. Built in the 1990s, they are 451.9 metres high, and the sky bridge joins the two towers at the 41st of 88 floors. The towers look brilliant at night in particular.
There are limited tickets each day for the tour. Nic and I got spots on the 12.15pm tour so returned to the hotel for breakfast, a nap, to do washing and pack our bags (I had planned to laze by the pool but by this stage it was pouring with rain).
The tour up the towers was worth it. It really is an incredible structure. Because of my fear of heights I did not get close to the glass windows (Nic though I looked really funny trying to take photos whilst not getting close). The view was incredible, despite the cloud and mist in the distance that prevented a really exceptional view.
We returned to the hotel, grabbed our bags then headed to the bus station. Nic minded the bags whilst I bought our tickets. Luckily a bus was due to leave for Cameron Highlands, so we ran to make it in time. The trip took over 4 hours. Nic slept quite a bit of the way – I was jealous because I just can’t sleep sitting up. I spent the time watching the scenery and doing Sudoku. It was a really roomy bus which was good. The road the last 2 hours of the trip was incredibly slow due to the windy roads (a lot like the great ocean road). I couldn’t help but notice the ferns, incredibly tall trees and lush greenery. There was also a lot of evidence of landslides.
We grabbed a taxi from the bus station at Cameron Highlands, to take us the 5 minute ride to our hotel. Mr Joe, the taxi driver, gave us his card and told us he takes people out on tours of the area. The hotel was big and comfortable. We had a great view from our 4th floor bedroom overlooking the valley, which was partly concealed by cloud. By this stage it was about 7pm so we headed into town for some dinner. At the reception we bumped into Stefanos, who was on our firefly tour in KL. He was travelling by himself so we invited him to join us.
Mr Joe had recommended an Indian restaurant in town so we went there for dinner. It was a great meal. During the time we looked through guide books and tour brochures to decide what we would be doing the next day. Stefanos decided he would join us for a day trip. We decided to hire Mr Joe (on an hourly basis), to take us around the sites.
What a great night sleep...it was so cool in the Highlands compared to KL, and also very peaceful.
